Improviso: A Bird at the Window: St John's Smith Square, London

Improviso is a young quartet who met in London and started making music together in 2017. They are passionate about bringing each performance to life through improvisation, rejecting the traditional classical music paradigm of revering great ‘works’ as set in stone, and dreaming beyond that to make music that speaks to us today. In this concert they play music inspired by the opening song, ‘a bird looked at the window’, which tells the story of a bird seeking refuge having escaped from its cage.

Online improvisation workshop

Join Fatima and Florence from Improviso for an evening of online improvisation. This workshop will explore the famous repeating 'Folia' bassline, and participants will have the opportunity to try out and learn techniques and styles of improvisation. In advance of the session you will be emailed a recording of the looped bassline, some examples of composed Folias you might wish to take inspiration from, and some reading and listening recommendations. All levels and instruments welcome - the only requirement is imagination and an open mind!

To register to participate in the workshop please email richard@sjss.org.uk for more details. Please note that this workshop is free of charge, but places are limited and must be booked in advance.
